We had an unbelievably amazing time in Tennessee with our friends a few weeks ago. We went to Nashville for Halloween then drove to the Smoky Mountains (Gatlinburg) the very next day. Our cabin was ridiculously high up and the view was spectacular (as you can see above!). I couldn’t believe how many trees were changing color! Seeing something like that that you haven’t had the privilege of seeing in years was an indescribable experience. We had been craving the “fall experience” for awhile now so planning this trip seemed like the perfect way to get to do so in the most quintessential way.

what to wear hiking

On our second day in the Smoky Mountains, we went hiking and saw the most beautiful leaves! We had expected to see some bears but coincidentally we ended up seeing about 6 in total back at our cabin. The first one we saw was right across from the driveway and when we looked, we saw another one just cruising on down the road. To say that seeing these animals was surreal would be an understatement. I guess I always thought that if I saw a bear in real life that I would just run the other way, but these bears were pretty docile and definitely curious. One of the bears we saw was less than 50 feet away! And he was just munching on some acorns and watching us, probably thinking “who the hell are these people and why are they talking to me?”.

So you know it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t use this trip as an opportunity to add to my wardrobe! As soon as I heard we were going to have our “fall experience” I did the happy dance and immediately started mapping out my attack. I knew I wanted: hiking boots (reminiscent of the ones Cheryl Strayed/Reese Witherspoon wore in “Wild”), a Patagonia fleece and ball cap, a cozy red beanie, thick wool hiking socks, colorful gloves, scarves, plaid flannel shirts, hiking leggings, Ugg boots (for the flight and cabin), and of course a “onesie” for cuddling up by the fire with the book I needed to finish!
